Bonsai is an art form that requires years of training and
centuries of dedication. At the 2012 International Bonsai Summit, a tree was
selling for 100 million yen, less than a million dollars. And many of these
trees are considered absolutely precious.
So what makes bonsai so expensive? There could be various reasons for hight cost of a Bonsai Tree,
#1 Time Requirements
The extraordinary amount of time that this process takes means that there are not many trees around. Some of the most valuable bonsai are over 800 years old, and so the supply is not going to increase anytime soon.
#2 Costly Bonsai utensils and tools
Bonsai utensils and used tools are often handmade and can cost thousands of dollars on their own. Some types of trees are also difficult to grow or require some techniques and can fetch high prices.
#3 Extraordinary Skills needed
The skills required to grow these trees play a major role in their value. They are often bent and twisted into shapes, located around rocks, or placed alongside other trees to mimic a small forest.
#4 Labour requirements
Tree growth is limited by years of pruning, wiring, reporting, and grafting, and plants should be inspected and watered frequently. It needs sufficient amount of labour to do all these works
#5 A single mistake can destroy whole plant
It takes years to master many of these techniques, and any mistake made can permanently destroy the shape of a plant that has been growing for centuries or even kill a plant.
#6 It is a art of planting
The process and time required for this process is unlike any other form of art. While work is almost a form of sculpture, plants are living things and will always react in their own way.
But, more than anything else, it is the art of dwarfing a regular tree to create a perfect miniature representation of nature in a small pot. It has a long history and these trees are works of art
that are important to their beauty and the artist's vision.
